| Situated off the coast of Indian Ocean in the Southern part of Chile, Chiloe Island is the largest island in the country and also the second largest in entire South America after Tierra del Fuego. Chiloe Island is located in the Los Lagos region and for its huge size; Chiloe Island is also reffered as 'greater Island of Chiloe'. Its unique geographical location has made Chiloe Island one of the greatest tourist destinations in the country.

The natural assets which are in abundance are the greatest attraction of Chiloe Island. But apart from that the island has got so many other things to offer. The villages situated on the undulating and beautiful natural landscapes, the villagers, the activity of the friendly local people would surely charm you. Besides the local delicacies and the religious places are also major tourist attractions of the Chiloe Island. You would find some of the oldest churches and chapels of Chile in the Chiloe Island. There are 150 churches and chapels in Chiloe Island that were erected by Jesuit Miss that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The ancient and beautiful architectural patterns of the churches and chapels would surely attract your eyes, and the cold and peaceful atmosphere, the silence inside would definitely touch your heart. In fact Chile has applied to UNESCO to include these ancient churches and chapels in its list of World Heritage Sites.
Most of the villages in Chiloe Islands are situated on the huge mountains that surround the island from all sides. You would surely enjoy then clear view of Pacific Ocean and Andes Mountain range from the high altitude of the villages and the damp wind which is a mixture of sea breeze and the rainfall in the mountain. Heavy rainfall in Chiloe Island results in rich vegetation. You would find pleasure in watching local farmers working in acres and acres of agricultural land on the mountain slopes. The traditional homes built by the local people on wooden pillars are an interesting feature of Chiloe Island. Apart from that the woolen handicraft of Chiloe Island is also major attraction. Boating or kayaking in the inner sea which flows between Chiloe Island and the continent is also an interesting option while traveling in Chiloe Island.
