Easter Island is situated in the Southern coast of Chile off the coast of Indian Ocean and is one of the most isolated islands in the world. Easter Island got its name from Easter Sunday as it was discovered on that day by Dutch admiral Jacob Roggeveen. Not only in Chile and South America, but Easter Island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire world for the gigantic stone statues that stand tall along the coast facing the Pacific Ocean. The huge statues that are made of volcanic statues were erected more than 1200 years ago but the reason behind such creation is still unknown. According to historians, these huge stone statues or human faces know as 'Moai' were built by a group of seafarers who reached Easter Island riding on a double-hulled canoe. But where they came from where they went, why did they disappeared suddenly is still not know. The existence of Moai is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries and enigmas of the world. The natives of Easter Island call it Rapa Nui or Te Pito o Te Henua, which means 'the navel of the earth. The silent and mysterious atmosphere of then Easter Island and the huge statues would surely attract your eyes and mind.
However, apart from watching the 'Moai' you may also spend your time in the Ra Pui National Park which protects some of the greatest archaeological sites of Easter Island and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
